You Don’t Need a Superstorm: Disaster Recovery Basics

In this blog post, I’m going to discuss disaster recovery. After superstorm Sandy on the East Coast, there were people without power weeks after the storm. Data centers were affected by the storm as well. And although GoGrid’s East Coast data center didn’t experience an outage, some providers did. So it is timely to consider geographically redundant solutions rather than wait for the next superstorm.

Geographic Redundancy

There are three basic strategies you can implement today on GoGrid to make your application better able to recover from a data center outage: cold standby, warm standby, and full geographic-redundancy with multiple active data centers. Let’s start off with a definition:

Redundancy: (noun) the ability of an application or system to resist the failure of one or more constituent parts, or recover quickly from such failure.

Systems administration and IT management boils down to that proverbial 3:00am phone call. Your application is down. How do you respond? Having the proper plan and appropriate recovery assets in place is the key to surviving this all-too-real scenario. How current are your backups? Do you have standby servers already in place? If not, how quickly can you bring new ones online?

How To Optimize Your Database Backups and Text File Compression with pbzip2 and pigz

Recently, GoGrid was examining performance enhancements on several internal processes; among these enhancements was switching from standard gzip to “pigz”. Since I had never heard of this “pigz”, I was intrigued by this supposed “parallel” implementation of gzip; meaning it uses all available CPU’s/cores unlike gzip. This prompted me to ask, “I wonder if there is a parallel implementation of bzip2 as well”, and there began my endeavor.

pigz and pbzip2 are multi-threaded (SMP) implementations of their respective idol file compressors. They are both actively maintained and are fully compatible with all current bzip2 and gzip archives.

If you’re like me, you might’ve stayed away from using gzip or bzip2 due to the single-threaded aspect. If I try to compress a, let’s say, 2GB file, the system becomes rather sluggish; the reason being is that the “compression tool of choice” uses almost all of 1 core of today’s multi-core, multi-CPU systems and creates an uneven load between the cores, causing the CPU to operate very inefficiently.

In this example I have a .tar file with several databases in it, which totals 1.3GB. The system in question is a GoGrid dedicated server with 8 cores. The server’s load is around 1 and is a production database server.

Using bzip2, the file took approximately 6 minutes and 30 seconds to compress. Yikes!

An interesting article was posted to the Outsourcing Journal that is relevant to anyone considering using the Cloud as a viable infrastructure strategy. There are plenty of important topics & points in this article, especially as many companies begin moving full infrastructure to the Cloud. Availability in the Cloud

Today I came across a very interesting post, written by Mukul Kumar, which poses an intriguing topic of Cloud availability. Spawned most likely because of some “lack” of availability on Amazon’s S3 recently, Kumar discusses how companies might want to look towards creating redundancy across Cloud providers (such as GoGrid) in order to increase the availability of a company’s online presence.

All too frequently, companies look to a single solution for their hosting options, whether it be within the Cloud or using more traditional hosting methods. These single solutions can easily translate into single sources of failure, “don’t put your eggs in one basket” being the phrase the comes to mind.

Kumar illustrates some ways to make a company’s Cloud reliance a bit more redundant by using some traditional methods of choosing various providers.

Using a fairly straight-forward rsync (an open source utility that provides fast incremental file transfer) methodology, Kumar shows how servers can be configured as hot-standbys using different Cloud providers, allowing for redundancy to take place.
