Interviews at Sys-Con Cloud Computing Expo ’09: f5 Networks and GoGrid

Thursday, November 5th, 2009 by

I had the pleasure of not only attending the Cloud Computing Expo in Santa Clara, CA this week, staffing the booth and generally enjoying talking to a wide range of developers, technologists, vendors, partners and others, but I also was able to do a couple of interviews with Peter Silva, Technical Marketing Manager of f5 Networks. If you don’t already know, free f5 load balancing has been built in to GoGrid since its launch in March 2008.

Below are pair of interviews that appear here as well as on the f5 DevCentral site. We hope you enjoy them!

First is the one with Peter as “interviewer” (also available at f5 DevCentral):

Then the one where I interview Peter about the Expo:

3 GoGrid Executives Discuss Their Thoughts on VMWorld 2009, The Cloud & GoGrid

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 by

Last week, VMWorld 2009 Expo took center stage in San Francisco at the Moscone Center. With 3+ days of VMWare sessions and exhibits, there was a lot of buzz about VMWare, but also about Cloud Computing in general. GoGrid was an exhibitor at the show, in the Innovators Pavilion, and we found that many of the attendees were looking not solely at VMWare but at other Cloud Computing vendors as well (like GoGrid).

Several of our executives spent time at the show, not only staffing our booth, but also attending sessions as well as talking to vendors and other companies on the expo floor.

During and after the show, I interviewed three GoGrid executives to get their impression of what they saw and heard, as well as their thoughts on what the announcements meant to them and to GoGrid. I interviewed:

  • John Keagy – CEO & Co-Founder of GoGrid
  • Mario Olivarez – VP of Products at GoGrid
  • Paul Lappas – VP of Engineering at GoGrid

Each of these video interviews are available below, as well as on GoGrid’s Facebook Fan Page and on the GoGrid YouTube channel.

While VMWare in the IT organization may be a good fit for many, there are obviously other alternatives for hosting a full IT infrastructure in the Cloud. GoGrid is one of the pioneers from that perspective. We not only provide Windows and Linux servers within the GoGrid Cloud, we also provide many industry standard components like hardware-based load balancing, private and public networking, dynamic mountable Cloud Storage solutions, an industry hardened and robust SLA and the ability to connect a cloud front-end with a dedicated or colocated backend server infrastructure. We like to call GoGrid a “cloudcenter” which is essentially a datacenter in the cloud. You can read up on the cloudcenter idea here and here.

At the show, we will be giving out high-value promotional codes good for trying out GoGrid’s Cloud Infrastructure for free. Of course, we will also have lots of SWAG (Stuff We All Get) to give away!

Presentation: “How To Get Started in the Cloud” GoGrid @ CloudWorld09

Friday, August 21st, 2009 by

Last week, CloudWorld09 Expo took place in San Francisco and GoGrid‘s CEO, John Keagy, did a presentation titled “How To Get Started in the Cloud” to a fully packed room in one of the sessions at the Expo.

The speaker abstract was as follows:

The Cloud Computing phenomenon is happening NOW – it’s a reality and can provide more flexibility for your web hosting – faster, easier and at a lower cost. Companies do not need to own their own server hardware or network infrastructure anymore. The ease of scaling up or out when the need arises, the speed which new web applications can be designed, prototyped, tested, and deployed, and the inherent cost savings (CapEx to OpEx) are truly attractive. Cloud Computing is not just a buzz term we are hearing more and more, but the next wave of hosting infrastructure. As the Cloud continues to gain acceptance, developers, designers, sysadmins and IT professionals need to understand the advantages, best practices and how to get started using Cloud Computing.

In this session, John Keagy, founder and CEO of GoGrid discussed:

  • What is Cloud Computing – The Cloud Pyramid
  • The Benefits of Cloud Computing & Hybrid Hosting
  • What can Cloud Computing do for me and my business
  • The Competitive Landscape & Key Differentiators
  • Cost Savings of Cloud Computing – pay only for what you need
  • How to determine when to utilize Cloud Computing
  • How should you get started using the Cloud?
  • How to identify what to put in the cloud first

The presentation is available below as well as on SlideShare.
