The Actual Truth About the Economics of Cloud Computing

Thursday, May 26th, 2011 by

Don’t let the media fool you. Which of these actually make cloud computing financially compelling?

  1. Super cheap power, such as hydro-electric
  2. Shipping container datacenters
  3. Massive datacenters
  4. Blade servers
  5. Datacenters with super-efficient cooling
  6. VMware virtualization licenses
  7. Pay-as-you-go pricing
  8. Automation
  9. Shared platforms
  10. Commodity hardware

The answer is NOT “all of the above”! If you said “pay-as-you-go pricing, automation, shared platforms, and commodity hardware” then you win. In fact, these four concepts are so powerful that I believe that they will shrink the entire IT economy. IT shrinking? How could that be possible? Yes, I think that the $3.3 trillion dollar global IT economy could be cut in half. When I’ve made this declaration before I’ve been likened to the commissioner of the US Patent Office who was rumored to have said:

“Everything that can be invented has been invented.”

Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. patent office, 1899 (attributed)

In truth he didn’t say this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_H._Duell

But I’m still saying that I think we’re currently seeing the peak of complexity and cost in IT. IT is going to get easier and less expensive from this point forward. There. You have it in writing. (more…) «The Actual Truth About the Economics of Cloud Computing»

$500 Limited Time Discount on Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 in GoGrid Dedicated Servers

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 by

At GoGrid, we are experts in “Hybrid Hosting“! What is hybrid hosting you ask? Essentially it takes the best of the physical and virtual hosting worlds and combines the two in order to provide a compelling and flexible infrastructure offering in the Cloud. If you desire the elasticity of virtual servers, being able to horizontally scale on demand, with GoGrid, you have that option with a variety of GoGrid and Partner virtual server images available. However, if you or your clients require compliance certification or you are simply accustomed to working with bare metal servers, a GoGrid physical server may be the solution you need.

If you haven’t experienced the power of Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 running on a dedicated machine, we have come up with a program to get you using them quickly. Not only can you instantiate Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as a GoGrid Virtual Server, you NOW have the option to deploy them as GoGrid Physical Servers.

So, for a limited time, we are providing a $500 discount on dedicated servers running Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

In order to qualify for this $500 promotional credit, customers must contact a GoGrid sales representative AND mention this offer. And be sure to tell them that you read about it on the blog. You can also find more information as well as a sign-up form here.

GoGrid Whitepaper: “Scaling Your Internet Business”

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 by

Today we released a new Whitepaper written by Randy Bias, GoGrid’s VP of Technology Strategy titled “Scaling Your Internet Business.” If you are a Web Application Developer or interested in learning about scalability, specific to how it relates to Web Applications in or outside of the Cloud, I encourage you to give this whitepaper a read.

The whitepaper can be downloaded here from the GoGrid site.

Scalability is critical to the success of many organizations currently involved in doing business on the Web or who are providing information that may suddenly become heavily demanded. While there are many strategies that IT organizations can undertake, the way they are designed and implemented can make or break these businesses.

The GoGrid whitepaper discusses the following topics:

  • How web applications scale
  • Cloud Computing and scalability therein
  • Thinking through and choosing a scaling strategy
  • GoGrid & ServePath scalability options

Scalability can come in all shapes, sizes and flavors. You can scale “up” (vertically) or “out” (horizontally). Choosing the right option can be tricky, if not daunting. Depending on what you want your strategy to be, you can choose “cloud-only”, “dedicated/colocated-only” or a “hybrid” approach.
