Create a Basho Riak Cluster on GoGrid

Monday, July 9th, 2012 by

Basho is a GoGrid partner and responsible for the open-source Riak project. If you are not familiar with Riak, it is a well regarded open-source distributed database. It was built off of the Dynamo concept so it is often compared to Cassandra and Amazon Dynamo DB.

Riak is used as a fast, fault-tolerant distributed database. Companies like Mozilla use it for storing and analyzing beta testing results. Mozilla needed a solution to help improve the user experience and that would allow them to store large amounts of data very quickly. Another example of a company using Riak is Bump which uses Riak to scale and manage massive amounts of data sent between it’s millions of users. Riak is used to store elements of past user conversations so that communication history is readily accessible to users.

Basho Riak version 1.1.4 is now available as a GoGrid Community Server Image (CGSI). You can find it when you launch a virtual machine and search for “Riak”. This image is available in all our data centers. This CGSI contains the open source version so support is only available via the community site and will not have all the features present in the Enterprise version. However, you can use this image to either run a proof of concept (POC) of Riak to see if it will meet your needs or to run a small cluster. These will run on GoGrid’s high performance VMs which have been shown to have significant performance advantages over other cloud implementations.

Video: Interview with Izoox Co-Founder on Successes Using the GoGrid Cloud

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012 by

Cloud computing provides all different types of solutions to businesses across the globe. And each solution is unique, especially if carefully crafted to fill a niche. At GoGrid, we love how our customers use our infrastructure in compelling ways, especially when the value that they receive is passed on to their clients.

izoox-logo

One such company is Izoox who came to GoGrid a few years ago in search of a way to add value to their hosting and website management services that they provide to their customers. But sometimes that journey to find the perfect infrastructure solution can be challenging. Izoox, in fact, tested over 60 different providers over a course of 5 years – even having to endure outages where they were put at the end of a queue for support because they weren’t “big” enough. For Izoox, this was unacceptable and they were finding that their customers were suffering and they had to find a cloud infrastructure provider who could not only perform, but could also work hand-in-hand with them to craft the best solution for their needs.

The Interview

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Matthew Scalf, co-owner & co-founder of Izoox to discuss his journey, his pain points along the way, and how he eventually settled on GoGrid as his primary cloud infrastructure partner.

Comedy, Conversations & Clouds – Recap of GoGrid/Equinix Event in Amsterdam

Monday, April 2nd, 2012 by

Earlier this month, we had had the distinguished pleasure of celebrating GoGrid’s international expansion to EMEA by hosting a party with Equinix in Amsterdam. Europe has been more than hospitable to our new European team, and this event was no exception.

This was my 4th visit to our Amsterdam HQ and data center and I’m truly excited to see the traction within the European community and the adoption by those European companies seeing value in multiple global points of presences.

The location of the event was at a converted auto shop which is now a cool new restaurant and lounge, it still had some stylish remnants of its past – including an actual Ferrari in the center of the room! This venue turned out to be the ideal location for our welcoming party.

The turnout to the event was great. GoGrid received a warm welcome from over 100 different partners and customers as well as some of the top international companies who also have expanded to Europe. Having a casual atmosphere in which to discuss technology services, the importance and adoption of cloud computing within Europe and the direction it is going globally definitely set the stage for some powerful conversations.

But, it wouldn’t have been a party if we didn’t have a guest speaker. Comedian, Greg Shapiro, was perfect for the event. Shapiro is also from the US but now makes a living in the Netherlands. His antics and insights on transitioning cultures made for a fun and enjoyable evening. Greg Shapiro is top notch and we highly recommend him to anybody looking for a sharp speaker who understands both a US and European audience.

Local Comedian Featured at GoGrid-Equinix Event in Amsterdam

Monday, March 12th, 2012 by

In January, we announced the opening of GoGrid’s new EMEA Headquarters and deployment of our cloud infrastructure in Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. To mark this collaboration, we’re pleased to announce an upcoming event jointly hosted with our friends at Equinix. The “Heads in the Cloud” happy hour will take place Thursday, 15 March, 2012, from 16:30–19:00 at De Goudfazant, Amsterdam (Noord). If you’re in the area, we’d be delighted to have you join us for the celebration.

The highlight of the evening will definitely be the comedy of Greg Shapiro, our guest speaker. If you haven’t heard Shapiro perform, check out his website and learn how this Chicago native ended up in Amsterdam and why his humor helps make everyday business bearable. We expect it to be a terrific event, so make sure to block the date out in your calendar.

After Shapiro’s performance, relax over drinks and chat with your peers—partners, suppliers, and customers—as well as the GoGrid and Equinix teams. We’ll be happy to answer your questions about our plans for the region moving forward. And for those who’ve never visited De Goudfazant before, ”Heads in the Cloud” provides the perfect complement to the stylish waterfront location and unique atmosphere.

If you’re interested in attending, we encourage you to register ahead of time via email to Geesje.Duis-Bakker[AT]eu.equinix.com. We look forward to seeing you on the 15th!

From February 13-16, 2012, in Santa Clara, CA, GoGrid sponsored Cloud Connect 2012, an expo devoted to educating professional seeking to learn more about the benefits of Cloud Computing. We have been a long time sponsor of this show and each year it seems to get better, not only from the caliber of content being presented, but also in terms of the level of expertise on cloud computing that attendees profess.

As I attend many of these conferences as a sponsor, exhibitor and interested party, I have seen a great evolution not only of knowledge and education but also in the cloud services being presented by various companies at the show. A few years ago, it was all about “what is cloud” and how do we define it. The past years have allowed us to really fine-tune the definition and really move beyond this to rolling up the sleeves and implementing cloud solutions. I’m definitely encouraged by the progress of companies with their cloud innovations and the individuals looking to capitalize on this influx of knowledge.

Talking with customers and prospects looking for or implementing cloud infrastructure solutions gives and insight into what is working in the cloud and what people are really looking for. For example, a few years ago, we introduced the concept of Hybrid Hosting – the ability to mix and match virtual and physical servers within the same architecture, all managed through a single pane of glass, so to speak. In fact, many of our recent Case Studies show that hybrid environments are really the reason why these companies turned to GoGrid for their cloud solution.
