James Gosling to Speak on Innovation at GoGrid Cloud Meetup on 5/22

GoGrid, BEAR Data Solutions, NetApp, and ScaleArc have an exciting cloud meetup planned for next week (Wednesday, May 22, 2013) in San Francisco. In addition to intelligent conversation, free food and drink, and demos from a variety of companies whose products make cloud computing even better, we also have a fantastic featured speaker – James Gosling. Known affectionately as the “Father of Java,” one of the most popular and widely used programming languages in the world, James Gosling is currently the Chief Software Architect at Liquid Robotics (a GoGrid customer). He frequently shares his thoughts on creativity and innovation with everyone from university students to technology thought leaders, and is particularly interested in what makes a good idea successful. His impressive list of accomplishments and credentials include a BSc in computer science from the University of Calgary as well as a PhD in computer science from Carnegie-Mellon University. He was a Sun Fellow at Sun Microsystems where he was a lead engineer and did the original design of Java as well as implemented Java’s original compiler and virtual machine. In 2002, he was awarded The Economist Innovation Award, and in 2007, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of Canada’s highest civilian honors.

James’s company, Liquid Robotics, is an early adopter of cloud computing and its technology gathers all types of oceanic data via a wave-powered, autonomous marine robot, the Wave Glider®.

San Francisco Event – Cloud Computing, Cocktails, & Canapés

It’s rare not to encounter fog in San Francisco. Call it fog, mist, clouds…it gives San Francisco part of its personality. With GoGrid though, it’s all about clouds, all of the time. And I’m not talking about those fluffy ones in the sky or shrouding the Golden Gate Bridge, I’m talking Cloud Computing. Being headquartered in “cloudy” San Francisco means we’re sitting on top of some of the brightest minds in tech, not just in the US, but in the world.

In an effort to bring some of these brilliant technophiles together to discuss how cloud computing is shaping the future for businesses, small and enterprise alike, GoGrid is hosting a cloud event, “Cloud Computing, Cocktails, and Canapés,” in San Francisco. If you’re local, join us next week, Wednesday, March 13 and come share how the cloud in impacting your world.

GoGrid CEO and founder, John Keagy, will be kicking off the event with his views on the importance of cloud computing, how GoGrid started and the exciting direction it is taking us. And speaking of exciting, Excite Digital Media CTO, Allen Hammock, will be talking about how they leverage the cloud to support their massive global growth and outdistance their competition.

Local Comedian Featured at GoGrid-Equinix Event in Amsterdam

In January, we announced the opening of GoGrid’s new EMEA Headquarters and deployment of our cloud infrastructure in Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. To mark this collaboration, we’re pleased to announce an upcoming event jointly hosted with our friends at Equinix. The “Heads in the Cloud” happy hour will take place Thursday, 15 March, 2012, from 16:30–19:00 at De Goudfazant, Amsterdam (Noord). If you’re in the area, we’d be delighted to have you join us for the celebration.

The highlight of the evening will definitely be the comedy of Greg Shapiro, our guest speaker. If you haven’t heard Shapiro perform, check out his website and learn how this Chicago native ended up in Amsterdam and why his humor helps make everyday business bearable. We expect it to be a terrific event, so make sure to block the date out in your calendar.

After Shapiro’s performance, relax over drinks and chat with your peers—partners, suppliers, and customers—as well as the GoGrid and Equinix teams. Spotify Music Apps Hack Weekend – Sponsored by GoGrid

To celebrate the release of their API, Spotify sponsored a Hack-a-thon at SPiN Ping Pong Club in New York City from Friday February 24 until Sunday February 26. Spotify was joined by big brands like Doritos, CW, McDonald’s, Showtime, State Farm and Mountain Dew. Technology companies sponsoring the event included Facebook, Twilio, FourSquare, The Echo Nest and of course, GoGrid. GoGrid provided all the cloud servers for the event to support the developers as they created brand new apps using the Spotify API in conjunction with other API like Facebook’s Open Graph. GoGrid’s manager of cloud ecosystem, Paul Lancaster and I were on-hand to meet with developers and provide support for the event.

50 CentOS x64 cloud servers were provisioned to the hackers by GoGrid to build their applications free of charge with root level access for maximum flexibility. Hundreds of hackers showed up to build the next great apps and were treated to live performances by Blood Orange and MNDR. While hack-a-thons tend to have attrition over time, hackers stayed throughout the night and most for the entire weekend.

There were roughly 30 projects worked on during the weekend which ranged from an app called Museik (UI shown above) that extracts content from the internet related to the release date of a song on Spotify to a project called Orbidal by the students of the VCU Brandcenter that gathers the collective feelings of your Facebook feed and creates a playlist based on that mood on Spotify.
